OrCam Receives the Louis Braille Corporate Recognition Award

Blind from a young age, Louis Braille was determined to find a way to read. He developed a coding system based on patterns of six raised dots that enabled the blind to read through touch. The positions of the different dots represent the different letters of the alphabet. By age 15, he ironed out the system and braille began to spread. Now, the braille system he devised is utilized daily by blind and visually impaired people worldwide. Louis Braille proved that if you are motivated, you can do incredible things.

Every year since 1959, the Associated Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired has presented the Louis Braille Award to honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions on behalf of people who are blind or visually impaired.

On January 29, 2016, OrCam was humbled to accept the 56th Annual Louis Braille Corporate Recognition Award in front of a room full of past award recipients and key players in the low vision industry. OrCam received the award along with two other honorees, Dr. Gustavo D Aguirre, professor of medical genetics and ophthalmology at Penn’s school of Veterinary medicine and Kareem Dale, who was responsible for coordinating the Obama Administration’s efforts to ensure that people with disabilities were on a level playing field with all Americans.

After hearing about the award, the Mayor of Philadelphia, James Kenney, was so impressed that he issued a Citation on OrCam’s behalf:

“It is fitting and appropriate, therefore, that the City of Philadelphia officially recognizes with this Citation OrCam Technologies for the significant contributions the OrCam has made to increase the independence of people who are blind or visually impaired. We congratulate OrCam Technologies on being the recipient of this well-deserved recognition and wish the OrCam team every success in their continued endeavors.”

The OrCam team continues to work hard to improve the OrCam device to help people who are blind or visually impaired regain their independence.
